abstract = {We provide a rigorous Laughlin-pump argument that establishes the fractional quantization of the Hall conductance directly from the Laughlin state as a topological index. Our proof uses a recently defined index of a pair of pure states together with an infinite matrix product state analysis that is rigorous on a sufficiently thin cylinder. By virtue of the connection to an index, our result implies, in particular, that Laughlin states are representatives of topologically stable fractional quantum Hall phases.},

abstract = {We consider quantum lattice Hamiltonians and derive recursive spectral relations bridging successive particle number sectors. One relation gives conditions under which the charge gap dominates the neutral gap. We verify these conditions under a triad of symmetries (translation-invariance, charge and dipole conservation) that are present, e.g., in periodic fractional quantum Hall systems. Thus, this gap domination, previously observed numerically, is a universal feature imposed by symmetry. A second relation yields a new induction-on-particle-number method for deriving spectral gaps. The results cover both bosons and fermions.},

abstract = {The excited state photophysics of heteroatomic organic molecules are determined by the interplay between internal conversion and intersystem crossing. Experimental techniques which can access both orbital and spin character of the electronic excited states in detail are crucial for a mechanistic understanding of these processes. In this work, we demonstrate the required sensitivity to excited-state orbital and spin character with femtosecond time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We apply the method to probe the excited state photophysics of pyrazine in aqueous solution at the nitrogen K-edge. We clearly separate the dynamics of two singlet and two triplet excited states and identify a new mechanism for the intersystem crossing of pyrazine involving the dark Au(nπ*) state.},

abstract = {Establishing the (non)existence of a spectral gap above the ground state in the thermodynamic limit is one of the fundamental steps for characterizing the topological phase of a quantum lattice model. This is particularly challenging when a model is expected to have low-lying edge excitations, but nevertheless a positive bulk gap. We review the bulk gap strategy introduced in [S. Warzel and A. Young, The spectral gap of a fractional quantum Hall system on a thin torus, J. Math. Phys. 63 (2022) 041901; S. Warzel and A. Young, A bulk spectral gap in the presence of edge states for a truncated pseudopotential, Ann. Henri Poincaré 24 (2023) 133–178], while studying truncated Haldane pseudopotentials. This approach is able to avoid low-lying edge modes by separating the ground states and edge states into different invariant subspaces before applying spectral gap bounding techniques. The approach is stated in a general context, and we reformulate specific spectral gap methods in an invariant subspace context to illustrate the necessary conditions for combining them with the bulk gap strategy. We then review its application to a truncation of the 1/3-filled Haldane pseudopotential in the cylinder geometry.},
