SUMMARY:Topology of the Ritz energy landscape
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by questions from quantum chemistry and spectral optimization\, this talk explores the topology of the Ritz energy landscape. Ritz values are the eigenvalues of a larger matrix (or operator) B compressed to a smaller trial subspace S. We can view the k-th Ritz value as a real-valued function (“Ritz energy landscape”) on the manifold of all possible\ns-dimensional trial subspaces\, the Grassmannian Gr(n\,s). \nWe show that the k-th Ritz value (for any k) is a perfect Morse function\, once the definition of “perfection” is suitably adjusted. A Morse function is called perfect if it describes the topology of its domain in the most efficient way possible\, meaning the number of its critical points of each type exactly matches the corresponding Betti number of the space. While the k-th eigenvalue is Lipschitz rather than smooth and while its critical points are not isolated — and not even Morse-Bott — its critical point count is nevertheless well-defined and reflects the topology of the Grassmannian in a minimal\, perfect way. \nThe proof proceeds by introducing a suitable perturbation which ensures that points of non-smoothness are not critical (by a theorem of Zelenko and the presenter) and that the critical points that remain are isolated. We also show that the notion of perfection we introduce (“homological perfection”) is closed under such perturbations. \nBased on joint work with Mark Goresky (IAS).

SUMMARY:Rapid mixing in long-range Lindbladians and static properties of their fixed points
DESCRIPTION:The classification of mixed-state phases requires criteria beyond two-point correlation functions\, such as the decay of the mutual information (MI) and the conditional mutual information(CMI)\, with the latter encapsulated in the notion of Markov length. In this talk\, we show how such static properties of the fixed point of a Lindbladian follow from natural dynamical features of its generator: rapid mixing and frustration-freeness. We focus on systems with long-range interactions\, and prove i)that local Lindbladians satisfying\n(global) rapid mixing and frustration-freeness have fixed-points whose CMI decays with the shielding distance\, and ii) that (local) rapid mixing together with primitivity and regularity implies global decay of MI. For long-range interactions both quantities decay polynomially rather than exponentially\, in contrast to the finite- and short-range regimes where exponential decay (a finite Markov length) is expected within a phase. We further show that Gibbs states of long-range\, non-commuting Hamiltonians satisfy a local Markov property at any temperature.

SUMMARY:A Spectral Transition in the Stability Theory of the 1-D Soler Model
DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will present recent spectral results related to the stability theory of standing waves ψ(t\,x) = e−iωtφ(x) for the one-dimensional Soler model\, a nonlinear Dirac equation\, with power nonlinearity.\n \n\n  f(s) = s|s|p−1\, p > 0.\n \n\n  The analysis is motivated by the so-called gap property arising in the stability theory of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. More precisely\, we study the spectral structure of the Dirac operators obtained by linearization around standing waves\, focusing on the existence of eigenvalues inside the spectral gap and resonances at the thresholds of the essential spectrum.\n \n\n  I will describe a sharp spectral transition in the nonlinearity at the critical exponent p = 1: threshold resonances present in the Gross–Neveu case generate eigenvalues inside the spectral gap for 0 < p < 1\, whereas no threshold resonances occur for p > 1.

SUMMARY:The index of a pair of pure states and the quantum Hall effect
DESCRIPTION:The index of a pair of projections on a Hilbert space was introduced in 1973 by Brown-Douglas-Filmore and connected to the integer quantum Hall effect by Avron-Seiler-Simon in 1994. For two orthogonal projections P\,Q such that P-Q is compact\, index(P\,Q)=dimimP∩kerQ-dimimQ∩kerP. It is manifestly an integer\, and enjoys norm and compactness stability\, much like the related Fredholm index. Such indices played a pivotal role in describing the quantization and stability properties in the quantum Hall effect; ASS94 related the Hall conductance to the index of a Fermi projection P and its Laughlin-flux-inserted projection U*PU. What becomes of this story in the presence of interactions? To describe infinitely-many interacting electrons in infinite-volume\, the Hilbert space is replaced by a unital C-* algebra A (a CAR algebra)\, but there is no obvious notion of a Fredholm index. We introduce a new notion\, the index of a pair of pure states (on A)\, prove its quantization\, invariance and stability properties\, and relate it to the (possibly fractional) Hall conductance. We comment that Kitaev’s invertible states always have integer conductance. Joint with Bachmann and Tauber.

SUMMARY:On deriving a kinetic equation from many-body quantum dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Effectively describing the long-time dynamical behavior of quantum systems is a long-standing open problem. When the coupling constant λ of the interaction is small\, the dynamics of the system up to kinetic time t ~ λ -2 is conjectured to be effectively governed by the Boltzmann-Nordheim kinetic equation. In this talk\, we consider a system of weakly interacting lattice fermions at thermal equilibrium\, and I will describe how the two-point time correlation function of the system depends on the equilibrium solution of the Boltzmann-Nordheim equation. We approach the problem using a perturbation expansion and represent the appearing terms by Feynman diagrams. \nThis is joint work with Phan Thành Nam\, Herbert Spohn\, and Minh-Binh Tran.

SUMMARY:Birth of a gap: critical phenomena in the normal matrix model
DESCRIPTION:We investigate a family of radially symmetric Coulomb gas systems at inverse\ntemperature \ncoming from the normal matrix model. The family is characterised by the\nproperty that the density of the equilibrium measure vanishes on a ring at\nradius \, which lies strictly inside the droplet. The large n expansion of\nthe free energy is obtained up to a novel term. Next\, we perform a scaling\nlimit of the correlation kernel at the scale and obtain a new limiting\nkernel in the bulk\, which differs from the well-known Ginibre kernel. \nJoint work with Matthias Allard based on arXiv:2509.24529

SUMMARY:Three-body Hamiltonian for abelian anyons with zero-range interactions
DESCRIPTION:Anyons are 2d identical quantum particles with an intermediate exchange symmetry characterized by representations of the braid group. In the abelian case\, they can be modeled through the so-called magnetic representation\, namely as a system of bosons with an Aharonov-Bohm flux attached to each particle. In this talk\, I will discuss the construction of self-adjoint Hamiltonians\, different from the Friedrichs realization\, for a system of three abelian anyons. I will focus in particular on the Ter-Martirosyan-Skornyakov extensions. This family of Hamiltonians turns out to be parametrized by a suitable boundary operator; I will present a complete classification of its self-adjoint realizations and compute the negative spectrum for the specific case of interest. These results shed light on the possible occurrence of Thomas instability in the three-anyon model. Joint work with Michele Correggi (PoliMi) and Davide Fermi (PoliMi)

SUMMARY:A framework to study twisted bilayer graphene in a tight binding model
DESCRIPTION:The study of the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has garnered much attention from the condensed matter community recently. TBG is obtained by stacking two graphene monolayers on top of each other\, and rotating one of them with respect to the other. Theoretical and experimental analyses have found that the electronic properties of TBG depend very strongly on the angle between the layers. In fact\, a handful of “magic” angles have been predicted at which TBG becomes a superconductor\, and this has even been verified experimentally. \nThe model commonly used to study TBG is an effective one\, and was derived by Bistritzer and MacDonald. In this talk\, I will present recent results on developing a framework to study TBG from first principles. To be more exact\, we consider a tight-binding model for the electrons\, but make no further approximations. Using a renormalization group technique\, we construct a perturbative expansion to study TBG that is convergent when the twisting angle satisfies certain diophantine conditions. This is joint work with V. Mastropietro.

SUMMARY:The liquid-vapor phase transition in a system with a finite but coarse-grained attraction
DESCRIPTION:The standard approach to studying the liquid-vapor phase transition uses the Maxwell double-tangent construction. Whereas this construction is easily justified physically\, deriving it mathematically has proved to be more difficult. In 1966\, Lebowitz and Penrose proved the Maxwell construction in a mean field model\, where the particles interact via a hard-core repulsion\, and an infinite range\, infinitely weak attraction. Generalizing their result to finite pair attractions remains an open problem. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss a proof of the existence of a liquid-vapor phase transition in a system with an attraction that is finite\, but is also coarse-grained. More precisely\, we split up space into mesoscopic boxes\, and define an attraction that ignores the location of the particles within each box. Defined in this way\, our model is reflection positive\, which allows us to prove the existence of a liquid-vapor phase transition. \nThis is joint work with Qidong He\, Joel L. Lebowitz\, and Ron Peled.

SUMMARY:Mixing times of liftings of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (Probability Colloquium Augsburg-Munich)
DESCRIPTION:Under suitable assumptions\, a Markov chain will converge at large times to its stationary measure\, over a time scale known as the mixing time. Markov chains can then be used to approximately sample from a complex distribution\, which is the principle underlying Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques. In this context\, there has been strong interest both in the physics and the mathematics literature in lifting Markov chains\, which is a way to modify an initial Markov chain so that that the lifted Markov chain converges faster to its stationary measure. We study a particle system which is both a lifting of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) and a periodic instance of self-repelling random walks. Using a graphical representation\, we identify a coupling time with some delay\, which allows us to study two notions of mixing times of the model. For the standard notion of mixing time\, we show that the model does not converge abruptly to stationarity\, whereas for a mixing time associated with an average of the distribution over the last few steps\, convergence to stationarity is abrupt\, which is known as the cutoff phenomenon.

We will give an overview of older and recent results on the limit process and its properties for KPZ growth models with flat initial conditions\, ranging from regularity\, decorrelation in space and time\, to the persistence probability of the limit processes.

DESCRIPTION:For Schrödinger-type equations with time-dependent\, spatially local interactions — including nonlinear cases — there exist solutions that are neither localized nor scattering. These solutions exhibit sub-ballistic spreading\, yet are global\, asymptotically stable\, and transport mass (the L^2-norm) to infinity. I will describe the construction of such self-similar solutions and discuss some of their physical implications.

SUMMARY:Rapid thermalization of lattice CSS codes
DESCRIPTION:Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes\, such as the toric code\, are a widely studied class of quantum error-correcting codes. Understanding the thermalization time of these systems is important not only for error correction but also for applications like Gibbs sampling. \nWe show that CSS codes on a lattice satisfy a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality and thus thermalize rapidly in any dimension at sufficiently high temperatures. For a special subclass\, including the toric code\, this rapid thermalization even holds at all positive temperatures. The central idea underlying our approach is to exploit the structure of CSS codes to decompose a quantity into two simpler\, (almost) classical components\, allowing us to apply tools from classical statistical mechanics to analyze the thermalization. In the last part I will show how this method generalizes to 2D Abelian quantum double models. \nThis is joint work with Ángela Capel\, Li Gao\, Angelo Lucia\, David Pérez-García\, Antonio Pérez-Hernández\, Cambyse Rouzé and Simone Warzel.

SUMMARY:(Semi) Relativistic (Semi) Classical PDE (around) the Self-Consistent Pauli Equation
DESCRIPTION:We present the relativistic quantum physics model hierarchy from Dirac-Maxwell to Vlasov/Euler-Poisson that models fast moving charges and their self-consistent electro-magnetic field. Our main interest is (asymptotic) analysis of these nonlinear time-dependent PDE\, with focus on the Pauli-Poisswell/Darwin system which is the consistent model at first/second order in 1/c (c = speed of light) that keeps both relativistic effects “spin” and “magnetism”. Emphasis is on the (semi)classicial limit for vanishing Planck constant. We use both WKB methods and Wigner functions where we extend the 1993 results of P. L. Lions & Paul and Markowich & Mauser on the limit from Schrödinger-Poisson to Vlasov-Poisson\, with similar subtilities of pure quantum states vs mixed states. In the hope of taming the mathematical complications stemming from the magnetic field\, we are interested also in developing “quantum/semiclassical velocity averaging lemmata” building on the 1988 ideas of Golse\, Perthame\, Sentis and P.L.Lions. This talk aims to explain the models\, the new results & ideas of proofs/techniques\, as worked out in joint works mainly with Jakob Möller (X) and also Pierre Germain (ICL)\, Changhe Yang (Caltech)\, François Golse (X).

SUMMARY:A multiplicative ergodic theorem for disordered quantum processes
DESCRIPTION:Repeated compositions of quantum channels arise naturally in many places across quantum: they arise\, for example\, in the transfer operator approach to quantum spin chains\, and also in the repeated interactions description of open quantum dynamics. Assuming the system of interest is subject to some amount of disorder\, it is therefore natural that one consider repeated compositions of random quantum channels\, i.e.\, quantum channels sampled from a stochastic process. Under a stationarity assumption\, such compositions fit well into the mathematical framework of Oseledets’s classical Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET); in this talk\, I shall discuss my recent work refining the MET for repeated compositions of random bistochastic quantum channels\, and\, time-permitting\, I shall describe applications of this work to understanding entanglement breaking properties of such compositions.

SUMMARY:How Does a Quantum Computer Work?
DESCRIPTION:Quantum mechanics\, now about a century old\, is a very successful physical theory of matter on a small scale. From its first description until today\, it has surprised scientists and laypersons alike by the strange behaviour it attributes to particles\, atoms\, and molecules. This behaviour can be characterized by the keywords Uncertainty\, Superposition\, and Entanglement. \nIt took about sixty years before it was realized that these three characteristics do not just express a certain vagueness and strangeness of matter on a small scale but can actually be used to our advantage. In 1994 Peter Shor made this idea concrete by devising an algorithm that would enable large arrays of quantum systems to perform specific calculations (factoring large integers)\, which are impossible to do in practice on any classical device. With this algorithm\, present-day cryptographic schemes can be broken\, provided such “quantum computers” can be made to work. \nStarting from a discussion of the “two-slit experiment”\, we sketch the working of Shor’s algorithm and discuss the possibilities of future quantum computers.

SUMMARY:Quantum Tomography from the Evolution of a Single Expectation
DESCRIPTION:Conventional quantum tomography assumes a high degree of control over the system in question in order to measure many observables. On the other hand\, a classical dynamical system may be reconstructed from a time series of a single observable by means of delay embeddings. Inspired by this\, we investigate the possibility of tomography of a quantum system undergoing a known homogenous time evolution when we have control over only the time of measurement. Remarkably\, full quantum state tomography is possible for every non-trivial binary measurement evolved by any quantum channel\, bar a null set. This remains true when restricted to Lindblad semigroups\, although unitary evolution–even with added simply depolarizing noise–is insufficient beyond the qubit case\, highlighting the need for non-trivial noise. We explore various further aspects of the problem\, including prior information\, expectation bounds for finite statistics\, and recovery of an infinite time series of expectation values from a finite one given only spectral properties of the evolution.
