SUMMARY:Rapid thermalization of lattice CSS codes
DESCRIPTION:Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes\, such as the toric code\, are a widely studied class of quantum error-correcting codes. Understanding the thermalization time of these systems is important not only for error correction but also for applications like Gibbs sampling. \nWe show that CSS codes on a lattice satisfy a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality and thus thermalize rapidly in any dimension at sufficiently high temperatures. For a special subclass\, including the toric code\, this rapid thermalization even holds at all positive temperatures. The central idea underlying our approach is to exploit the structure of CSS codes to decompose a quantity into two simpler\, (almost) classical components\, allowing us to apply tools from classical statistical mechanics to analyze the thermalization. In the last part I will show how this method generalizes to 2D Abelian quantum double models. \nThis is joint work with Ángela Capel\, Li Gao\, Angelo Lucia\, David Pérez-García\, Antonio Pérez-Hernández\, Cambyse Rouzé and Simone Warzel.

SUMMARY:(Semi) Relativistic (Semi) Classical PDE (around) the Self-Consistent Pauli Equation
DESCRIPTION:We present the relativistic quantum physics model hierarchy from Dirac-Maxwell to Vlasov/Euler-Poisson that models fast moving charges and their self-consistent electro-magnetic field. Our main interest is (asymptotic) analysis of these nonlinear time-dependent PDE\, with focus on the Pauli-Poisswell/Darwin system which is the consistent model at first/second order in 1/c (c = speed of light) that keeps both relativistic effects “spin” and “magnetism”. Emphasis is on the (semi)classicial limit for vanishing Planck constant. We use both WKB methods and Wigner functions where we extend the 1993 results of P. L. Lions & Paul and Markowich & Mauser on the limit from Schrödinger-Poisson to Vlasov-Poisson\, with similar subtilities of pure quantum states vs mixed states. In the hope of taming the mathematical complications stemming from the magnetic field\, we are interested also in developing “quantum/semiclassical velocity averaging lemmata” building on the 1988 ideas of Golse\, Perthame\, Sentis and P.L.Lions. This talk aims to explain the models\, the new results & ideas of proofs/techniques\, as worked out in joint works mainly with Jakob Möller (X) and also Pierre Germain (ICL)\, Changhe Yang (Caltech)\, François Golse (X).

SUMMARY:A multiplicative ergodic theorem for disordered quantum processes
DESCRIPTION:Repeated compositions of quantum channels arise naturally in many places across quantum: they arise\, for example\, in the transfer operator approach to quantum spin chains\, and also in the repeated interactions description of open quantum dynamics. Assuming the system of interest is subject to some amount of disorder\, it is therefore natural that one consider repeated compositions of random quantum channels\, i.e.\, quantum channels sampled from a stochastic process. Under a stationarity assumption\, such compositions fit well into the mathematical framework of Oseledets’s classical Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET); in this talk\, I shall discuss my recent work refining the MET for repeated compositions of random bistochastic quantum channels\, and\, time-permitting\, I shall describe applications of this work to understanding entanglement breaking properties of such compositions.

SUMMARY:How Does a Quantum Computer Work?
DESCRIPTION:Quantum mechanics\, now about a century old\, is a very successful physical theory of matter on a small scale. From its first description until today\, it has surprised scientists and laypersons alike by the strange behaviour it attributes to particles\, atoms\, and molecules. This behaviour can be characterized by the keywords Uncertainty\, Superposition\, and Entanglement. \nIt took about sixty years before it was realized that these three characteristics do not just express a certain vagueness and strangeness of matter on a small scale but can actually be used to our advantage. In 1994 Peter Shor made this idea concrete by devising an algorithm that would enable large arrays of quantum systems to perform specific calculations (factoring large integers)\, which are impossible to do in practice on any classical device. With this algorithm\, present-day cryptographic schemes can be broken\, provided such “quantum computers” can be made to work. \nStarting from a discussion of the “two-slit experiment”\, we sketch the working of Shor’s algorithm and discuss the possibilities of future quantum computers.

SUMMARY:Quantum Tomography from the Evolution of a Single Expectation
DESCRIPTION:Conventional quantum tomography assumes a high degree of control over the system in question in order to measure many observables. On the other hand\, a classical dynamical system may be reconstructed from a time series of a single observable by means of delay embeddings. Inspired by this\, we investigate the possibility of tomography of a quantum system undergoing a known homogenous time evolution when we have control over only the time of measurement. Remarkably\, full quantum state tomography is possible for every non-trivial binary measurement evolved by any quantum channel\, bar a null set. This remains true when restricted to Lindblad semigroups\, although unitary evolution–even with added simply depolarizing noise–is insufficient beyond the qubit case\, highlighting the need for non-trivial noise. We explore various further aspects of the problem\, including prior information\, expectation bounds for finite statistics\, and recovery of an infinite time series of expectation values from a finite one given only spectral properties of the evolution.

SUMMARY:Regularized Dynamical Parametric Approximation for Stiff Evolution Problems
DESCRIPTION:Evolutionary deep neural networks have emerged as a rapidly growing field of research. This talk discusses numerical integrators for such and other classes of nonlinear parametrizations u(t) = Φ(θ(t)) where the evolving parameters θ(t) are to be computed. The primary focus is on tackling the challenges posed by the combination of stiff evolution problems and irregular parametrizations\, which typically arise with neural networks\, tensor networks\, flocks of evolving Gaussians\, and in further cases of overparametrization. Regularized parametric versions of the implicit Euler method and higher-order implicit Runge–Kutta methods for the time integration of the parameters in nonlinear approximations to evolutionary partial differential equations are presented. At each time step\, an ill-conditioned nonlinear optimization problem is solved approximately with a few regularized Gauß–Newton iterations. Error bounds for the resulting parametric integrator are derived by relating the computationally accessible Gauß–Newton iteration for the parameters to the computationally inaccessible Newton iteration for the underlying non-parametric time integration scheme. Numerical experiments that are designed to show key properties of the proposed parametric integrators are discussed.

SUMMARY:Stabilization by quantum fluctuations in ultracold gases of magnetic atoms: experimental observations and theory descriptions
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to their high degree of control and tunability\, ultracold atomic gases provide a rich platform for the study of quantum many-body effects. Ultracold gases of highly magnetic atoms exhibit unique interaction properties that lead to striking behaviors\, both at the mean-field level and beyond [1]. A decade ago\, a universal stabilization mechanism driven by quantum fluctuations was discovered in these gases. This mechanism prevents the systems from collapsing when the mean-field interactions become attractive\, and instead allows exotic states of matter to arise\, including ultradilute quantum droplets\, crystallized quantum states\, and especially the so-called supersolids [2]. In my colloquium\, I will present the seminal observations of these states and how they emerged from the long-standing progress in the field. I will discuss the theoretical description of these systems via an effective mean-field theory\, including the effect of quantum fluctuations via a higher-order effective interaction. I will outline our current understanding of the properties of these states and highlight open questions. \n[1] L. SUMMARY:Condensing zero range process
DESCRIPTION:We prove a fluid limit for the coarsening phase of the condensing zero-range process on a finite number of sites. When time and occupation per site are linearly rescaled by the total number of particles\, the evolution of the process is described by a piecewise linear trajectory in the simplex indexed by the sites. The linear coefficients are determined by the trace process of the underlying random walk on the subset of non-empty sites\, and the trajectory reaches an absorbing configuration in finite time. We identify the set of absorbing configurations and characterize the absorbing boundaries.\nJoint work with Johel Beltrán\, Daniela Cuesta and Milton Jara.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 08\, 2025\, at 12:15 pm\, Prof. Dr. Shi Jin (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) will give a talk on “Quantum Computation of partial differential equations and related problems” at TUM\, Boltzmannstr. 3\, 85748 Garching Forschungszentrum\, room 03.06.011. \nAbstract: Quantum computers have the potential to gain algebraic and even up to exponential speed up compared with its classical counterparts\, and can lead to technology revolution in the 21st century. Since quantum computers are designed based on quantum mechanics principle\, they are most suitable to solve the Schrodinger equation\, and linear PDEs (and ODEs) evolved by unitary operators. The most efficient quantum PDE solver is quantum simulation based on solving the Schrodinger equation. It will be interesting to explore what other problems in scientific computing\, such as ODEs\, PDEs\, and linear algebra that arise in both classical and quantum systems\, can be handled by quantum simulation. \nWe will present a systematic way to develop quantum simulation algorithms for general differential equations. Our basic framework is dimension lifting\, that transfers non-autonomous ODEs/PDEs systems to autonomous ones\, nonlinear PDEs to linear ones\, and linear ones to Schrodinger type PDEs—coined “Schrodingerization”—with uniform evolutions. Our formulation allows both qubit and qumode (continuous-variable) formulations\, and their hybridizations\, and provides the foundation for analog quantum computing which are easier to realize in the near term.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Continuous-Discrete-Variable Quantum Signal Processing: Algorithms and Applications
DESCRIPTION:Quantum computing with discrete variable (DV\, qubit) hardware is approaching the large scales necessary for computations beyond the reach of classical computers. Separately\, hardware containing native continuous-variable (CV\, oscillator) systems has received attention as an alternative approach\, yet the universal control of such systems is non-trivial. In this talk\, I will highlight novel quantum algorithms\, control protocols\, and applications developed for hybrid CV-DV quantum systems\, which offer powerful new computational paradigms that inherit the strengths of both DV and CV quantum processors. I will start by a pedagogical introduction to CV-DV systems and instruct sets for universal programmability. I will then present a variety of new hybrid CV-DV compilation techniques and algorithms\, including the extension of quantum signal processing to CV-DV systems. This is followed by several applications including state transfer\, quantum sensing\, and simulation of interacting spins and bosons. To facilitate the development of hybrid CV-DV processor systems\, I will also introduce formal Abstract Machine Models and Instruction Set Architectures — essential abstractions that enable developers to formulate applications\, compile algorithms\, and explore the potential of current and future hardware for realizing fault-tolerant circuits\, modules\, and processors. I will conclude the talk with open questions and future opportunities of hybrid CV-DV quantum computation in broader areas of science and engineering.

SUMMARY:Scaling limit of the harmonic crystal with random conductances
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we consider discrete Gaussian free fields with ergodic random conductances on ℤd\, d ≥ 2\, where the conductances are possibly unbounded but satisfy a moment condition. As our main result\, we show that\, for almost every realisation of the environment\, the rescaled field converges in law towards a continuous Gaussian field. We also present a scaling limit for the covariances of the field. To obtain the latter\, we establish a quenched local limit theorem for the Green’s function of the associated random walk among random conductances with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This talk is based on a joint work with Martin Slowik and Anna-Lisa Sokol.

SUMMARY:Phase transition for the late points of random walk
DESCRIPTION:Let X be a simple random walk in Znd with d≥3 and let tcov be the expected time it takes for X to visit all vertices of the torus. In joint work with Prévost and Rodriguez we study the set Lα of points that have not been visited by time αtcov and prove that it exhibits a phase transition: there exists α∗ so that for all α>α∗ and all ϵ>0 there exists a coupling between Lα and two i.i.d. Bernoulli sets B± on the torus with parameters n−(a±ϵ)d with the property that B−⊆Lα⊆B+ with probability tending to 1 as n→∞. When α≤α∗\, we prove that there is no such coupling.

SUMMARY:On the error analysis of full discretizations of Friedrichs' systems
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we address the full discretization of Friedrichs’ systems with a two-field structure\, such as Maxwell’s equations or the acoustic wave equation in div-grad form. \nWe follow a method of lines approach\, where we first discretize in space via the discontinuous Galerkin method. Subsequently\, we consider different second-order schemes for time integration\, namely the Crank–Nicolson scheme\, the leapfrog scheme\, and a general class of local time integration methods which comprises a locally implicit and a new local time-stepping scheme. We show the stability of the fully discrete schemes (subject to an appropriate CFL condition where necessary) and error bounds that are optimal in space and time and robust under mesh refinement. These bounds are derived within a unified error analysis based on the fact that all schemes can be interpreted as perturbations of the Crank–Nicolson scheme. \nWe conclude with numerical experiments in which we compare different local time integration methods for Maxwell’s equations. \nThis is joint work with Malik Scheifinger\, KIT \nFunded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG\, German Research Foundation) – Project-ID 258734477 – SFB 1173

SUMMARY:From tensor networks to Frobenius Schur indicators: some applications of state-sum models with boundaries
DESCRIPTION:State-sum constructions have numerous applications in both mathematics and physics. In mathematics\, they yield invariants for knots and manifolds and serve as a powerful organizing principle in representation theory. To illustrate this principle\, we discuss equivariant Frobenius-Schur indicators. In the context of physics\, we explain how state-sum models offer a conceptual framework for tensor network models\, based on collaboration with Fuchs\, Haegeman\, Lootens\, and Verstraete.

SUMMARY:Dynamical Gibbs variational principles for irreversible interacting particle systems with applications to attractor properties
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider irreversible translation-invariant interacting particle systems on the d-dimensional hypercubic lattice with finite local state space\, which admit at least one Gibbs measure as a time-stationary measure. Under some mild degeneracy conditions on the rates and the specification we prove\, that zero relative entropy loss of a translation-invariant measure implies\, that the measure is Gibbs with respect to the same specification as the time-stationary Gibbs measure. As an application\, we obtain the attractor property for irreversible interacting particle systems\, which says that any weak limit point of any trajectory of translation-invariant measures is a Gibbs measure with respect to the same specification as the time-stationary measure. This extends previously known results to fairly general irreversible interacting particle systems and joined work with Jonas Köppl.
